I Tried Dating Old School

What’s up, fellow millennials and zoomers? Let me tell you, I used to be one of those guys — proud member of the “Let’s Actually Meet in Person” tribe, trying to survive in a world where swipes, likes, and “u up?” texts are the norm. I believed in real connections, face-to-face conversations, and, well… romance.

So, there I was — a 24-year-old dude, raised on rom-coms and my grandpa’s tales of meeting my grandma at a dance, navigating this bizarre digital dating scene like it was still 1995. Spoiler alert: I was totally out of my depth.

It all started when I decided enough was enough. No more swiping on profiles that I’d never actually meet in person. No more overthinking the perfect bio or waiting for the ideal moment to send a message. I was going old school. Face-to-face, no filter. What could go wrong?

Apparently, everything.

My first shot was at a coffee shop. I spotted a cute girl, took a deep breath, and walked over. She looked at me like I had three heads. Apparently, saying “hi” to a stranger these days is the equivalent of asking them to sign up for a timeshare. Who knew?

Next, I gave it a go at a bar. I offered to buy a girl a drink, and she asked if I was part of some sort of experiment. I told her I just wanted to try dating the old-fashioned way, and she laughed so hard she spilled her drink. Not the reaction I was hoping for, but at least she’ll remember me?

And then… things took a surprising turn.

I was at this random event with no intention of meeting anyone, just minding my own business when she walked in. I don’t know what it was, but something clicked. I took a chance, approached her — face-to-face, no screens, no filters — and we just… connected.

No swiping, no perfectly crafted messages. Just us, in the moment.

We ended up talking for hours. No awkward pauses, no need for emojis to lighten the mood. Just a real conversation, and for the first time in ages, I felt that spark. The kind that doesn’t come from a profile picture or a flirty text, but from actually being in someone’s presence.

Fast forward, and here I am, in a relationship with the girl who took a chance on me when I decided to ditch the apps and go old school. Yeah, we still text (I mean, it’s 2024), but our story didn’t start with a DM or a swipe right. It started in real life, with a conversation, eye contact, and that moment where we both knew something clicked.

Looking back now, it’s kind of wild. I used to think dating was broken because of how much it’s changed with technology. But really, it was just waiting for the right person to meet me halfway — someone who wanted that same kind of real connection.

So, to anyone out there still hoping to meet someone off-screen, don’t give up. It’s possible. You might just find yourself stumbling into something real when you least expect it.

P.S. To my girlfriend reading this — thanks for proving me right. You’re the real deal, and I’m grateful every day we met the way we did. And no, I still won’t suggest Zoom dates.
