What They Don’t Tell You About Love A Story In Verses

There are some truths about love that we don’t learn from movies. I discovered them in the quiet moments between goodnight and good morning, in the space between raindrops, in the gentle understanding that comes with loving someone through their most unlovable moments.

Today, I want to share a different kind of love story. Not the kind that starts with a meet-cute and ends with a wedding. This is about the love that happens after — in the ordinary moments that turn out to be extraordinary.

Empty Spaces and Coffee Stains

In the kitchen where morning light spills
Like honey across our coffee-stained counter,
I find pieces of our story everywhere —
In the crooked magnets holding old photos,
In the chipped mug you refuse to throw away,
In the way you still dance while doing dishes,
When you think no one’s watching.

Your presence lingers in empty rooms
Like a favorite song’s echo,
In the dent on your side of the bed,
In the dog-eared books you leave everywhere,
In half-finished crossword puzzles
And the endless sticky notes
That say nothing but mean everything.

I’ve learned that love isn’t in the grand gestures
Or the perfectly planned dates,
But in how you bring me water before bed
Without me asking,
How you know by my silence
When my world is too loud,
How you fight my demons
With terrible jokes and warm hugs.

They never told me love would be this quiet,
This ordinary kind of extraordinary,
This symphony of small moments
That build a lifetime:

The way you kiss my forehead when I’m stressed,
How you remember my mother’s birthday,
The grocery lists we write together,
Planning meals for days we haven’t lived yet,
Promising each other time
Like we own it.

And sometimes, in random moments,
While you’re just sitting there,
Reading glasses sliding down your nose,
Hair a mess, wearing that old t-shirt
I’ve tried to throw away three times,
My heart stops —

Because love isn’t just about the butterflies
That dance in your stomach,
It’s about finding home in another person’s chaos,
It’s about choosing them
Even when the fairy tale fades
And reality sets in with its
Monday mornings and burnt toast
And bills to pay.

Love is how we find magic
In mundane moments,
How a simple “drive safe” text
Carries the weight of
“Please come back to me,”
How “what do you want for dinner?”
Really means “I want to take care of you,”
How “I’m here” can say everything
Without saying much at all.

So let me love you in these small ways,
In shared silences and silly arguments,
In grocery store aisles and traffic jams,
In the space between sleeping and waking,
Where dreams blend into reality
And I find myself grateful
That of all the hearts in this world,
Mine found its way to yours.

The Truth About Real Love

Here’s what they don’t tell you about love in fairy tales: the most beautiful parts happen off-camera, in moments that would seem boring to anyone else. It’s not about grand gestures or perfect timing. It’s about finding someone who makes the ordinary extraordinary just by being there.

Real love is in the trenches of daily life. It’s in:

  • The way they know exactly how to make your coffee
  • Their ability to read your mood from just a text
  • The shared language of inside jokes and half-finished sentences
  • The comfortable silences that feel like conversations
  • The fights that end in understanding rather than victory

Why This Matters

In an age of carefully curated social media love stories and “relationship goals,” we need to remember that real love isn’t photogenic. It doesn’t always translate well to Instagram. It’s messy and ordinary and somehow magical exactly because of that.

The most profound love story you’ll ever live will probably look boring from the outside. And that’s exactly how it should be.

A Message to Those Still Searching

If you’re waiting for your own love story to begin, know this: the right love won’t feel like a movie. It will feel like coming home. Like exhaling after holding your breath for too long. Like finding the missing piece of a puzzle you didn’t even know you were solving.

Don’t wait for the perfect moment or the perfect person. Wait for the one who makes imperfect moments perfect just by sharing them with you.

To Those Already There

To those who found their person — the one who sees them in their morning messiness and loves them anyway — cherish those small moments. They’re the ones you’ll remember when you’re old. They’re the real love story.

And to my own love, thank you for teaching me that the most beautiful stories are written in the margins of ordinary days.

If these words found their way to your heart, share them with someone who makes your ordinary days extraordinary. Sometimes we all need a reminder that love isn’t about the highlights — it’s about all the moments in between.

Tell me in the comments: What’s the most beautifully ordinary moment you’ve shared with someone you love?

Follow for more stories about love, life, and the beautiful mess in between.
