What You Need to Know Before Getting a Husky
What You Need to Know Before Getting a Husky
From Someone Who’s Had One for 2+ Years

Harry the husky ❤️
Huskies are amazing dogs, no doubt about it. Their striking looks, playful energy, and affectionate nature make them a dream pet for many. But let me tell you, having a Husky is not all cute photos and snow-filled adventures. After living with one for over two years, I’ve learned a lot — and I’m here to share the real deal before you bring one home.
1. Huskies Are Energy in Dog Form
Huskies are born athletes. If you’re not ready to commit to daily exercise (and I mean a lot of it), you’re in for a challenge. My Husky can go for hours running, playing, and just being their wild self. A quick walk around the block won’t cut it — they need physical and mental stimulation every single day.
2. They Shed. A Lot.
Think you’re prepared for shedding? Double it. Now triple it. Huskies blow their coat twice a year, and during that time, you’ll find fur in places you didn’t think possible. Regular brushing helps, but be ready to embrace the fluff life — your vacuum will become your best friend.
3. They’re Escape Artists
Huskies are smart and incredibly curious. This combo makes them expert escape artists. Fences? They’ll climb or dig under them. Leashes? Better hold on tight. My Husky once figured out how to open a door by watching me! You’ll need to Husky-proof your home and yard like Fort Knox.
4. They’re Vocal (and Opinionated)
If you enjoy peace and quiet, a Husky might not be for you. They talk — a lot. From howling to “woo-wooing” and even sassy grumbling, they always have something to say. It’s charming, but also loud, especially when they want attention.
5. Independent, Not Obedient
Unlike some breeds, Huskies aren’t eager-to-please dogs. They’re independent thinkers, which can make training a test of patience. Basic commands like sit and stay? Sure, they’ll do it — if they feel like it. Consistent training is key, but don’t expect instant results.
6. Huskies Thrive in Cold Weather
Huskies are built for the cold, and they’ll happily frolic in the snow for hours. If you live in a warm climate, you’ll need to take extra care to keep them cool — think air conditioning, shaded walks, and lots of water.
7. They Need a Pack (That’s You!)
Huskies are incredibly social animals. They don’t do well being left alone for long periods and can become destructive if they feel isolated. My Husky thrives on companionship and gets along great with other dogs, but they demand your time and attention too.
8. They’ll Melt Your Heart
Despite all the challenges, Huskies are loving, goofy, and full of personality. They’ll make you laugh with their antics, cuddle up when you need comfort, and bring endless joy to your life. But they’re not for everyone, and that’s okay.
Having a Husky is a full-time commitment, but if you’re ready for the adventure, they’ll be the most loyal (and entertaining) companion you could ever ask for. Just know what you’re signing up for — they’re worth it, but only if you’re prepared for their unique needs.
