Last night, I caught myself doing something funny.
I was alone in my kitchen, music playing softly, and there I was — dancing like nobody was watching. Because, well, nobody was. My moves weren’t great. Actually, they were pretty terrible. But I didn’t care. And that got me thinking…
The Different Versions of You
Think about your day:
- At work: Professional you
- With family: Good child/sibling you
- With friends: Fun you
- On social media: Perfect you
But what about when you’re alone?
When nobody’s watching, we get weird. Like, really weird:
- Singing into our hairbrush
- Making faces in the mirror
- Talking to ourselves (admit it, we all do it)
- Eating straight from the fridge
- Dancing in our underwear
- Practicing fake conversations
- Trying to do that TikTok dance (and failing)
And you know what? That’s beautiful.
The Not-So-Pretty Parts
Being alone isn’t all fun and games, though.
Sometimes when we’re alone, we:
- Get angry about that meeting from three weeks ago
- Practice arguments we’ll never have
- Judge ourselves in the mirror
- Worry about things we can’t control
- Feel all the feelings we hide from others
And that’s okay too.
But here’s something interesting — when nobody’s watching, we’re often kinder than we think:
Picking up trash on an empty street
Smiling at dogs when their owners aren’t looking
Leaving the last cookie for someone else
Helping a stranger (and not posting about it)
Crying at happy endings
The Truth About Being Alone
Here’s what I’ve learned:
- We’re all a little weird when we’re alone
- That’s completely normal
- Those private moments make us who we are
- The person you are in private matters more than the person you pretend to be in public
You’re not just one version of yourself. You’re all of them:
- The silly dancer
- The shower singer
- The quiet thinker
- The secret dreamer
- The person who talks to plants
- The midnight snacker
- The emotional movie-watcher
And each version is real. Each one matters.
A Simple Question
So next time you’re alone, pay attention:
- How do you walk?
- What do you say to yourself?
- What do you do just for fun?
- Who are you when nobody’s keeping score?
That person — the one who shows up when nobody’s looking — that’s not your “true self” or your “fake self.”
That’s just you. All of you. Being you.
And that’s pretty amazing.
Here’s the thing about being alone: It’s not about becoming someone different. It’s about being everything you already are.
So dance badly. Sing loudly. Talk to yourself. Be silly. Be serious. Be whatever you are in that moment.
Because those private moments? That’s where the magic happens. That’s where you grow. That’s where you become more you.
And maybe that’s the whole point.
Next time you’re alone, try something: Just be. No judgment. No pretense. No performance. Just you, being yourself. You might be surprised by how good it feels.
So… who are you when nobody’s watching? And more importantly — do you like that person? Because that person is pretty special.
