To My Mom: Words I Should Have Said Years Ago
Yesterday, I watched my mom making breakfast. Just a normal day. Nothing special. But something hit different.
There she was, making everyone’s eggs exactly how they like them. Mine scrambled soft. Dad’s over-easy. Not even thinking about it. Just doing it, like she always has.
And it made me think:
How many mornings has she done this? How many times have I just eaten and run off? How many “thank yous” have I forgotten to say?
Mom,
I see you now. I see how you:
- Remember everyone’s favorites
- Keep track of all our lives
- Worry when we’re quiet
- Know when we’re lying about being “fine”
- Never forget to call
- Always have time to listen
Even when I:
- Rolled my eyes at your advice
- Was “too busy” to talk
- Forgot to call back
- Chose friends over family dinner
- Said “you don’t understand”
- Took you for granted
You never gave up on me.
The truth is:
- You were right about most things
- I miss your cooking when you’re away
- Your hugs still fix bad days
- I’m sorry for being moody
- I need you more than I admit
- You’re the strongest person I know
People say “I love you” all the time. But mom, I need you. Still. Always.
And I’m not just saying this because I want something (though I wouldn’t mind some of those cookies you make).
I’m saying it because:
- You deserve to hear it
- I want you to know it
- It’s simply true
Love, Your kid who finally gets it
P.S. Yes, I’ll be home for dinner. And yes, I’ll help with the dishes this time. For real.
To every mom reading this: We might not say it enough, but you’re the reason we’re standing. Thank you.
